Sasebo, Japan – The first period PE class at E.J. King Middle High School turned a volleyball unit into something way more meaningful than simply learning how to play.

High school students stepped up as mentors and helped coach the middle school students on how to serve, pass, and move on the court. It wasn’t always smooth; there were missed serves, awkward passes, and a few frustrated faces. The older students didn’t give up on the younger ones – and the younger students kept trying, even when it was hard.

Little by little, you could see the confidence building. Middle school students started asking questions, listening closely, and celebrating small wins.

“Teaching the kids was very fun,” said high school student Joshua Espino. “When they have the wiliness to learn, it makes it easier for us and more enjoyable for them.”

Instead of just playing, they were learning how to lead, how to support, and how to push through challenges. The gym became a place where mistakes were okay and effort was everything. Even with the challenges of sharing space, students showed patience, leadership, and a whole lot of heart.

This volleyball unit wasn’t just about sports – it was about building trust, building skills, and building each other up.
